News from 3 July:
"It is still very difficult to send email. Shortly, I have made a first acclimatisation climb to Camp 1 (5900m), returned back to BC, then we made a second climb to Camp 1 and then Camp 2 on
Gasherbrum 2 (6450m). I came back to BC 3 days ago.
We are ready to attempt the summit, but the weather is really bad with a lot of snow. All weather reports have been wrong so it is difficult to take any decisions. It seems like it will snow yet
another 4 days with a jet stream sweeping the summit until the 13th. Meanwhile we are waiting, and some climbers have already abandoned.
I am fine, but of course time is running and it starts to be difficult to make all three summits, so I will start trying doing 1 and se what else there is time for :-)."

"Il est toujours aussi difficile d'envoyer des mails. En resume, j'ai fait une premiere montee d'acclimatation jusqu'au camp 1 (5900m), retour au BC, puis une 2e montee au camp 1 puis au camp 2
(6450m) du G2. Je suis rentre au BC il y a 3 jours.
On est prêt pour le sommet mais la meteo est vraiment mauvaise avec beaucoup de neige. Toutes les previsions sont fausses et il est donc difficile de prendre une decision. Pour l'instant il semble
qu'il va neiger encore 4 jours sans parler du jet stream qui devrait balayer les sommets jusqu'au 13. En attendant on attend, certains grimpeurs ne supportent pas et ont deja abandonne.
Pour moi tout va bien bien mais le temps passe et cela sera difficile d'enchainner les trois.il faudrait d'ailleurs commencer par en faire .1 ;-)."

Philippe and all other teams in the Gasherbrum Base Camp are still going to have to wait many days before they can start their summit push. The snow is falling and creating very unstable slopes,
favourable for avalanches.
If the conditions doesn't get better they will most probably go for Gasherbrum 1 instead of 2 and that would be great for Philippe since he doesn't have the time to wait for very much longer to get
good conditions on Gasherbrum 2. The best would be to go up soonest on G1 and then G2 dierctly after - then hopefully have enough time to head over to Broadpeak that is a long days trekk away from
the Gasherbrums.
As most of the time in alpinism, it is not always up to you if you succeed or not. Weather conditions, luck and timing needs to be on your side - and meanwhile, all you can do is the Base Camp Hang
= lying in your tent, eat, sleep, read...
La météo force toujours toutes les équipes a rester au camp de camp de Base. La neige continue de tomber avec un risque d'avalanche important, en particulier sur le G2 entre le camp 2 et 4. Il va
falloir attendre plusieurs jours pour que cela se stabilise.
Si les conditions ne s'améliorent pas, ils vont probablement changer et faire le Gasherbrum 1 d'abord. C'est d'autant plus vrai pour Philippe qui ne peut pas attendre trop longtemps au Camp
Base s’il veut réussir les 3 sommets. Le Broad Peak est a1 long jour de marche du camp de base du Gasherbrum.
Comme souvent en alpinisme, ce n'est pas que la force ou l'expérience qui mènent au sommet. Le météo, la chance et le "timing" jouent un grand role - et en attendant tous ça, tout ce qu'on peut
faire, c'est le "Base Camp Hang" = rester dans la tente, manger, dormir, lire...

It is now confirmed from Altitude Junkies website: Philippe and the other French independent climber Gorgan climbed to Camp 1and then Camp 2 on the 27th and 28th respectively and are planning to
spend a second night at camp two for their personal acclimatization needs before departing for base camp.
Bad weather is coming in so they might stay in Base Camp for a few days.
Je viens d'apprendre que Philippe est l'autre grimpeur independent Gorgan (francais) sont montes jusqu'au Camp 2 du Gasherbrum 2 pour y rester 2 nuits pour s'acclimatiser. Ils sont probablement
deja de retour au Camp Base pour se resposer.
La meteo prevue pour les jours a venir est mauvaise, alors ils vont rester au camp base pendent quelques jours.

Hi all,
this is Anna writing from Islamabad and I am back from Base Camp. The technology hasn`t been great and I can only guess what is going on up there. The plan when I left Gasherbrum Base Camp the 23rd
was that Philippe goes up to Camp 1 and sleep there, continue to Camp 2 the day after to spend the night. Then he should verify the snow coloir together with his climbing partner Serap Jangbu
Sherpa. As of now they should be back in Base Camp to rest and go for a summit push on either Gasherbrum 1 or 2 soonest.

je, Anna Gatta, vous ecris d'Islamabad de retour du Camp Base. Le telephone satellite ne marchent pas tres bien, alors je ne peux pas vous donner de nouvelles precises... Normalement Philippe est
deja monte jusqu'a Camp 2 du G1 pour verifier avec son partenaire Serap Jangbu Sherpa les conditions du couloir des Japonais. Ils sont probablement rentre au Camp Base pour se reposer et
attendre le bon moment pour fair un essai sur soit Gasherbrum 1 ou 2 (suivant les conditions).

June 9: Islamabad (500m) - Besham (600m)
We left Islamabad after lunch hoping to reach Besham before the night. Most of the road was ok but many sections were very rough and took a lot of time. The scenery was nice and changing with the
altitude, between 500m and 1600m. We finally reached Besham at 11pm after 8hr drive. We spent the night in a protected area.
June 10: Besham (600m) - Skardu (2200m)
We left Besham at 6am with the hope to reach Skardu before the night. Unfortunately the road was worse than the first day, we had many mechanical issues and no A/C. The bus driver tried to catch up
some time driving too fast on a dangerous "road". We followed the Karakoram Highway (KKH), only 80km away from the Swat valley. We had a armed police escort for a while but never felt in danger.
The weather was a bit more cloudy so we barely saw the Nanga Parbat (8126m) but at least it was less hot in the bus. We finally made it to Skardu...in an "exiting" 18 hours. I can't imagine this
trip during the mousson, so on the way back we will take the plane.
June 11: Skardu (2200m)
Since we arrived at 2am, the night has been
short. We spent the day to buy last minutes item and pack everything for tomorrow. Everything has to be packed in 25kg bags for the porters.
The weather in
Skardu is amazing, there are sand dunes a few miles away and high mountains with snow right behind. The sun is strong but not too hot and the strong wind blows the sand from the dunes.
Next days
Tomorrow we will take a 4 wheels drive for another 7 hours to Askole. Then on the 13th we will start the trek to the base camp that we should reach on June 19th.

9 Juin: Islamabad (500m) - Besham (600m)
Nous sommes partis
d'Islamabad apres le dejeuner. Dans l'ensemble la route est bonne mais certaines sections sont en tres mauvais etat et prennent beaucoup de temps. Les paysages sont agreables et changent avec
l'altitude (entre 500m et 1600m). Nous sommes finallement arrives a Besham a 23h apres 8 heures fatigantes. Nous avons passe la nuit dans un hotel dans une zone protegee.
10 Juin: Islamabad (500m) - Besham (600m)
Nous sommes partis de Besham a 6h du matin avec l'espoir encore une fois d'arriver a Skardu avant la nuit. Malheuresement entre l'etat de la route, les pannes mecaniques et l'absence de clim, le
voyage a ete un peu plus rustique que prevu. Le chauffeur a essayer de rattraper le temps, conduisant a la limite sur une route/piste qui pardonne pas. Nous avons suivi la Karakoram Highway (KKH) a
seulement 80 de la vallee de Swat. Une escorte armee nous a suivi pendant un moment mais on ne s'est pas vraiment senti en danger. Le temps etait plus couvert, nous cachant le Nanga Parbat (8126m)
mais au moins il ne faisait pas trop chaud dans le bus. Nous sommes finallement arrives a Skardu apres 18 heures assez intenses. Je peux pas imaginer cette route pendant la mousson donc au retour
on prendra l'avion.
11 Juin: Skardu (2200m)
Avec notre arrivee a 2h du matin la nuit a ete courte. Aujoud'hui nous avons fait les derniers achats et prepare le chargement pour demain. Tout doit etre emballe dans des sacs de 25kg pour les
porteurs.
La suite
Demain nous prenons un 4x4 pour 7 heures palpitantes de plus. Le 13 juin on commencera le trek vers le camp de base que nous devrions rejoindre le 19. Je ne pourrai pas mettre a jour le blog
